2. Are you entitled to financial help?
There is a variety of financial support available. Talk to us and we will help you claim any support to which you are entitled.
Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The EMA is a cash award to help you carry on learning. It is a weekly payment worth between £10 and £30 for 16-18 year olds doing full-time courses from September 2008.
It will be paid into the student's bank account on a regular basis if the student has good punctuality, attendance, behaviour and participation on their course. There are also bonuses worth £100 if students remain on the course and make good progress with their learning.
Students are eligible if their household income is less than £30,000 and they are on a course or programme of courses for 12 hours or more per week. EMAs will not affect family benefits and will not be affected by any money earned by a student.
For further information, call the EMA helpline on 0800 121 8989 or log on to www.dfes.gov.uk/ema
Adult Learning Grant (ALG)
The ALG is a grant of up to £30 per week for adults aged 19 or over studying full-time on their first full Level 2 or first full Level 3 qualification. To be entitled, you must be earning less than £19,513 if you are single or less than £30,810 if you are in a couple. You will not be entitled to ALG if if you are in receipt of an out of work benefit or Income Support. To find out more, call the ALG hotline on 0800 100900 or log on to www.adultlearninggrant.com
Care to Learn (C2L)
If you are a parent and under 20 when you start learning, you could be entitled to help with childcare and transport costs through C2L. Your childcare provider must be Ofsted registered and you can find out where your nearest local childcare provider is by calling Childcare Link on 0800 960296.
Learner Support Fund (LSF)
The LSF is for learners who are studying an LSC funded qualification but are not eligible for EMA or ALG. It is means-tested and can pay for fees or other costs associated with the course, such as transport to the College, childcare, materials and books. Funding is limited and priority will be given to learners meeting certain criteria.
