Student Bus Travel Arrangements for 2009/10

  • The College will ask Trent Barton buses to provide bus travel in 2009/10 using its normal service routes (including the 706 and 707 routes) and also the Heanor – Ilkeston shuttle bus services as in 2008/09. The College will not provide bus passes for student travel in 2009/10.

  • Derbyshire based students aged under 18 should apply for and use a b-line discount bus pass available from Derbyshire County Council, with Nottinghamshire based students using the 50% travel assistance scheme, available to Nottinghamshire residents.

  • The College will not pay any bus subsidy to students who live less than 3 miles from the main College site which they are attending (eg Heanor or Ilkeston).

  • The College expects students to pay up to £5.60 per week/£200 per year from their own funds for bus travel and taking into account the local authority discounts as above. The College will pay for costs in excess of £5.60 per week/£200 per year, provided students have taken up their local authority entitlements to discounted travel, as above.

  • The College will seek to assist students aged 19+ who are not eligible for bus travel discounts, through the LSC Learner Support Funds – cases will be assessed individually and an early application to Student Services for assistance is advisable.

  • The College will reimburse students on a monthly basis in arrears for agreed support or where a student aged 16 – 18 and in receipt of local authority concessions has paid in excess of £5.60 per week. Claims will be validated against registers and/or EMA records.

  • The College will support outside of ? Trent routes within a fixed budget – first come, first served. Subject to approval by Student Support.

Which Bus Do I Catch?

Trent / Barton buses will be providing transport to College you can check which route will be best for you on their website: www.trentbuses.co.uk

In addition to the service routes Trent Barton also run 2 dedicated College routes the 706 from Belper and the 707 from Alfreton and Ripley, plus a shuttle bus service between Heanor and Ilkeston every morning and evening.

More details about any of these routes can be obtained from reception or on the college website www.sedc.ac.uk

What if I don’t live near a Trent Barton Route?

If you live over 3 miles away from a Trent Barton bus route then you may be able to get support towards your travel to the nearest bus stop. Please speak to a member of the Student Services team on 0115 8492016 for more information.

How much will it cost?

That will depend on where you live. The College expects you to contribute £200 per year towards your travel to college, this works out as £5.60 per week.

Can I get any help towards my travel costs?

If you are under 19 and live in Derbyshire then you are eligible for a b_line discount bus card which will entitle you to half price fare across Derbyshire.

If you live in Nottinghamshire and are under 19 and in full-time education then you are entitled to a grant of £150 from Nottinghamshire County Council to help towards your travel costs to college. For more information see www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/buses or telephone: 08449 80 80 80

If you are aged over 19, you may be able to get help from the College Learner Support Fund, each case will be individually assessed and an early application is advised.

If you think that you might need help with travel to college please see the Student Services team.

Can I get a bus pass?

The college will not be issuing a bus pass but you will be able to get a b_line card from reception at both campuses

What do I do if my bus fare is over £5.60 per week?

If you live further than 3 miles away from the college and your fare is over £5.60 a week, (after taking into account your b_line card or grant from Nottinghamshire County Council), the College will reimburse you for the value over £5.60 a week on a fortnightly basis.

Your attendance will be checked against registers and you will be expected to provide your bus tickets as evidence of travel. No ticket = No refund.

The money will be paid directly into your bank account so you will need to make sure that you have a bank account open and that you can provide the account number and sort code.

If you need any further information about buses please contact the Reception on 0115 8492000.
