Support for all - we're here to helpSome people need more help than others when settling into College life. We offer a friendly and supportive learning environment for all of our students with additional support available for those who need it.
We want to provide a safe and happy environment for all our students so they can develop socially as well as academically. South East Derbyshire College is committed to achieving a working and learning community free from discrimination, harassment and bullying, and to removing barriers to success.

We offer a wide range of support
- Impartial information and guidance throughout the year to help people choose the right course, even if they change their mind!
- Staff at enrolment to check students have chosen the right course
- An ‘induction’ in the first weeks to help students get to know the College and other students and make sure that all their questions are answered
- A Personal Tutor to give academic and personal support, help students plan their learning and review their progress on a regular basis
- Student Support Officers can help with a wide range of issues, both College-related and personal
- Additional Learning Support staff to help students with learning difficulties, e.g. dyslexia, sensory impairments, physical difficulties
- SEDC has a dedicated Connexions Personal Adviser who visits the College and can help with a wide range of issues including job opportunities, housing, training and personal problems
- Confidential counselling to support any emotional or personal problems at College or at home
- Careers advice to plan your life after College, whether that is Higher Education, an Apprenticeship or employment. We can also help you with skills such as interview techniques and CV writing.
- Welfare and financial advice
- Stop Smoking Advisors who help smokers to quit and organise regular healthy living activities

Are you entitled to financial help?There is a variety of financial support available. Talk to us and we will help you claim any support to which you are entitled.
Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The EMA is a cash award to help you carry on learning. It is a weekly payment worth between £10 and £30 for 16-18 year olds doing full-time courses from September 2008.
It will be paid into the student's bank account on a regular basis if the student has good punctuality, attendance, behaviour and participation on their course. There are also bonuses worth £100 if students remain on the course and make good progress with their learning.
Students are eligible if their household income is less than £30,000 and they are on a course or programme of courses for 12 hours or more per week. EMAs will not affect family benefits and will not be affected by any money earned by a student.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)
The ALG is a grant of up to £30 per week for adults aged 19 or over studying full-time on their first full Level 2 or first full Level 3 qualification. To be entitled, you must be earning less than £19,513 if you are single or less than £30,810 if you are in a couple. You will not be entitled to ALG if if you are in receipt of an out of work benefit or Income Support. To find out more, call the ALG hotline on 0800 100900 or log on to www.adultlearninggrant.com
Care to Learn (C2L)
If you are a parent and under 20 when you start learning, you could be entitled to help with childcare and transport costs through C2L. Your childcare provider must be Ofsted registered and you can find out where your nearest local childcare provider is by calling Childcare Link on 0800 960296.
Learner Support Fund (LSF)
The LSF is for learners who are studying an LSC funded qualification but are not eligible for EMA or ALG. It is means-tested and can pay for fees or other costs associated with the course, such as transport to the College, childcare, materials and books. Funding is limited and priority will be given to learners meeting certain criteria.
